Description:

Using a human skin model, this project determines the permeation of hazardous chemicals at relevant concentrations and the effect of decontamination solutions on the barrier integrity and penetration.

Operational Impact:

The research in this program is designed to provide experimental data to support evidence based decision making by emergency responders regarding skin decontamination in incidents involving toxic chemicals. In addition, the information is used to inform hazard and risk assessment models.

Transition:

For the chemicals that have been studied, reports were provided to relevant U.S. and Australian subject matter experts and published in applicable scientific journals. Information has been incorporated into decision support software to provide rapid information and guidance to emergency responders.
